You are Here

Where are we, where do we stand in the public domain?

For the last 20 years the physical border crossings in parts of the European Union are being removed. These closed off areas are being transformed into zones of exchange and interaction.

Where the physical borders on the international scale are disappearing, in the public domain we are generating more and more boundaries. Splitting up and taking control of different areas. By creating these booundaries in the public domain people cant deal anymore with the risks, unexpected events and strange people.

This poster serie is made as the design solution of the You are Here project. A serie that is made to show the new boundaries within the public domain. Making people aware of where they are. Transforming these boundaries into borders and creating a zone with possibilities for spontaneous contact and unexpected events.

SKOR | Foundation for Art and Public Domain is used as a fictional sender to give the posters a context in the public domain.

During this 2-day workshop we investigated the visual power of typography and text.

When does text become image? When can we still read it, when can't we? What is the minimal amount of visual information needed to get the message across?

Starting with cutting, painting, drawing, spraying and folding stuff and not only working on the laptop.

Where the physical borders on the international scale are disappearing, in the public domain we are generating more and more boundaries. Splitting up and taking control of different areas. By creating these booundaries in the public domain people cant deal anymore with the risks, unexpected events and strange people.

If we change these new boundaries into borders by making them visible we can create again possibilities for spontaneous contact and unexpected events.

Making people aware where they stand in the public domain.

Het Zwarte Gat

For this project I have selected the concept of time and space. What time and space have done with my vision of the black hole after ending the academy in Arnhem. The poster is a mapping of schools, projects, lectures and exhibitions that I took part in during the past two years. Visualized in different galaxies that I found in this 'black hole'.

NON(NEN)VELD
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
description

There is a growing feeling of insecurity in the Netherlands. The last figures say that almost 26% (CBS) of the population is feeling unsafe. At the same time there is a growing number of enclosed neighborhoods and buildings, these buildings are from a generic architectural style.

We want a secure environment but still have the maximum of individual freedom. We are making our environment more sterile, transparent and neutral to have the control over it.

When you look at classic buildings you can read the function, The buildings had an identity. You could read the city

Now buildings are losing there identity. The identity is shifting form the outside towards the inside of our buildings. Transforming the public space into a more uniform and hard to read area.

URBAN INTERVENTIONS
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
description

Exhibition at 'WORK IN PROGRESS' in Rotterdam.

'Urban Interventions' is a collection of projects made by 6 Graphic Designers from AKV St. Joost. Each of us has his or her own cultural background, interests and opinions about the Public Space in Rotterdam. Our main goal, however, was the same: to comment and improve on the usage of Public Space in the city. By researching each location, it's (supposed) function and it's users we were able to come up with interesting insights and possibilities that we in turn transformed in fully developed projects.

I showed the Stronger Through Battle project during this exhibition.

FROM SPACE TO (NON)PLACE
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
description

From space to (non)place’ is a project that concentrates on holes and less organized structures in the public space in the city center of Nijmegen.

A serie of tiles especially made for the blind which lead to doubtful destinations throughout the city, a few marks on the road which seems to be lost, and strangely placed stairs that are leading to nowhere are all combined in a tour.

This tour offers an inspiring and humoristic perspective of forgotten spaces in the public space. These spaces become places and visible by specifically placed posters which can be found throughout the city center.

The focus of the tour is the city center of Nijmegen. It contains part of the shopping area, the park and river (the Waal).

Stronger Through Battle Essay
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
description

De Verlengde Willemsbrug is a border between the new and the old, the Utopian ideas for the rebuild and the destructive appearance of the gabber culture. Two totally different identity’s in the same public area. This makes the Schizophrenic power of Rotterdam.

I want to show the schizophrenic power of the city. The power of clashing culture, identity’s and architecture and a city who sometimes loses it’s connection with reality.

The essay is a introduction towards the final work

Sound Portraits
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
description

A serie of portraits that are made by converting image into sound and the sound back into a image. The serie is part of a installation of two computers. One sender and one receiver. The sender is deconstructing an image pixel by pixel into sound and sending that to the receiver at the other end of a room or space. The receiver turns than the received sound back into a image.

This project was part of the OF_Lab workshop in Breda by Zach Lieberman.

Freedom is a gift
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
description

Freedom without opportunity is a devil's gift is a quote out Noam Chomsky's book Chomsky on democracy & education. The whole quote is actually "Freedom without opportunity is a devil's gift, and the refusal to provide such opportunities is criminal". My view on this quote is that in our society there is no real freedom if you don't have the power to buy services and products produced by our society. There is said our society is a free society but if you don't have the means to move freely in our society and can't do what you want, it isn't a free opportunity. Then the suggestion is a gift from the devil.

The Iconomy
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
description

The Iconomy is an project about the influence of an building on the spot there build. One of the best example is the Guggenheim in Bilbao. When it was build it helped to redevelop the city from a poor and crashing port town to a new cultural hotspot in the surroundings. And the question for my research was if this is also the case with the top 5 of the world tallest buildings. And i discovered that the buildings are more an ego-trip of the developers and company's behind it than a helping tool for a redeveloping of the surroundings.

Thesis
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
description

Is there a new engagement upcoming or is it just an evolution from earlier ideas from the 1960s an '70s? That is what i researched in my thesis. And i discovered that there are two ways for a designer. One is the environmental and the other is a social standpoint. In the design of the thesis is used a small dividing line in the overall text to show these two standpoints.

The Caracas Effect
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
description
-------------------------------

What will there be happening when you insert a Guggenheim Bilbao-style in the slums of Caracas, Venuzuela.

Una cultura para los cinco dedos! A culture for the five fingers. What will happen if you insert a cultural landmark in a poor area of the city? The five fingers are the five main slums, or 'informal cities' of Caracas, spread out in the mountains around the city. Would Caracas change just like Bilbao if a major international cultural landmark such as a Guggenheim museum would land in it?
...superando retos! 'Suprpassing challenges'. That is what the Guggenheim, and its subsequent transformation of the city, has done to Bilbao. Surpassing the challenges of an ageing industrial city, changing it into a global cultural hotspot by meanss of spectaular destination architecture. Or would, rather, Caracas change the Guggenheim?
